Third-Party Car Insurance

The legally mandatory minimum cover, protecting against your liability if your car injures someone or damages their property.

Overview

Third-party car insurance is mandatory under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, for every car owner in India — new cars must carry a 3-year third-party policy. It covers your legal liability if your car causes injury, death or property damage to someone else, but does not cover any damage to your own car. Premium rates for this cover are set uniformly by IRDAI across all insurers, based on engine capacity or battery capacity for EVs.

Highlights

  • Legally mandatory for every car owner in India
  • Covers third-party injury, death and property damage claims
  • Does not cover damage to your own car
  • Premium rates are set by IRDAI, the same across all insurers
